| "Please
accept the humble apology of another American, and please
let Adrian know that 99.99% of Coloradans and Americans do not agree
with or tolerate such behavior. Obviously bullying is universal and
while no society is totally free from this type of unfortunate human
behavior, when you read stories like Adrian's in today's America, it is
especially distressing and disappointing to see. As the father of a teenage boy, and having been a teenager myself, I understand and can remember similar situations from my youth, I had hoped that as a free society we had moved beyond this type of thing. Tell Adrian in my family's eye's, he is a true American Hero for what he did. His actions are what make this country great in the face of ignorance and immaturity. Please let him know that for many of us reading his story he's an American now and has given us all an example of what this nation is about and a lesson on how to act even for adults. I'm sure he realizes that by far and away, bullying is NOT what America is about." Email from Chris A. , Parker, CO |
"I'm very disappointed in society by what happened to Adrian last year after reading the article. I presume from watching the TV interview that he's made a full recovery, I do hope he's OK and please pass on my best regards to him. |

| "Dear
Adrian, our family was horrified to read about the verbal abuse you are
experiencing at West Middle School. Both of our children attended West
a few years ago, and verbally bullying was a problem at the school back
then. I can tell you that as an American: a) these bullies do NOT
represent the majority of us...thank good ! b) you and your
family are WELCOME here in our country and neighborhood. As an American family and as a Jewish family, we support you in resisting these cruel and stupid kids, and we wish you and your family health, happiness and prosperity." Kelly, Mindy, Hannah & Ben Greene |

| "I
just read the article!! My friend Frank Conway was right, we all have
to deal with bullies in one way or another, when it happens as brutally
as it did to Adrian, he should remember; the ones doing the bullying
are almost always failures in life. Bullies usually"peak" in middle and high school, and end up miserable people. The best revenge is success, and by the sound of it, Adrian is going to be very successful!! If I can help in any way, please let Adrian Know he will have the ENTIRE Broadway community behind him!!!" All the best, Christopher Sieber (Sir Galahad in New York Broadway's 'Spamalot') |
| An article in Reader’s Digest referenced a survey of 15,000 sixth through tenth graders reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2001. The survey indicated that about 30 percent of students admitted being bullies or victims of bullies. The same study indicated that about half of the sixth graders reported being bullied, with 13 percent stating that they were picked on at least once at week. |
| "Thank you for bringing this issue forward. I was bullied in school as a young person myself and lived in fear for years, afraid to tell my parents. Adrian is a very lucky boy to have you there to stand up with him." Randy Jensen |
| "It's
embarrassing that some of our own children don't have a better
historical perspective. The Nazis were the evil of their time, but not
all Germans were Nazis obviously. The German's have been our allies for
years, duh! They make great cars. This kid's dad was not even born
until after WWII was over. Maybe Adrian was going to get bullied
regardless, and his German heritage was just an easy thing to single
out? Whatever the reason, I feel bad for him. What's next, are British
kids going to get bullied for setting the White House on fire in 1812?" Posted by Lonestar on Feb 21, 2008 at 1:42 p.m. at rockymountainnews.com |
| "Hi Mr. Ulm, Thank you for sharing your thoughts with the Denver community. Please know that there are thousands of us out here who support you and your son, and would never condone that behavior. It was, as many people here have pointed out, a HATE crime. .... Please let Adrian know that not all Americans/Coloradans support this behavior, and we wish him nothing but the best life has to offer." A parent's blog |
| Please note how two kids took a stand in this article. |
| Dear Adrian, I am so glad that you came forth and told the world that you were being bullied. When I was just your age I was too afraid to tell anyone. I know that you moved from Germany to the United States and my situation was a lot like yours. I lived in one house for most of my life until the 7th grade. We were supposed to move to a new house but it wasn’t ready yet. So I went to a new school for 7th grade after going to the same school with my friends for those previous 6 years. Our house took longer than anticipated to finish so I went to that new school for 7th grade and another school for 8th grade where our new home was. Those kids at the new school for my 8th grade year told me that they hated me because I came from Huntington Beach and they thought I should look like a surfer and be cool. I wasn’t. I had glasses and braces and did not like sports. Most of the kids were OK but there were two jerks who would take me in the bathroom almost every day and beat me up. I even remember trying to get the nuns who ran the school to take notice but they thought it was just boys “rough-housing.” That was 35 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. My nephews and nieces now go to that same school. One day when I was visiting them for lunch my nephew was making fun of his cousin and I got so mad at him that my own anger scared me. I told him that you can do whatever you want at home, but in public family is a safe space and you never make fun of your family in public. Now I work in New York City for a charity called Broadway Cares. We raise money in theatre for AIDS and family service organizations across the country. One of the best things about my job is that I know that I am making a difference in this world. Another great thing is that I get to meet and become friends with some pretty great people too. Media work, increasing public awareness, making schools and parents more sensitive Offering nationwide workshops, seminars and consultation services to improve the education system Address parents, teachers and school districts for creating a more winning academic environment We want to talk/present/advice/consult about: Bullying, justice and revenge, acceptance and affiliation, developing self-discipline, gratifications, common discipline practices that don't work -- and why, address particular needs We know that bullying also exists in the workplace, so we will address that too We are glad to report that we are working together with a professional expert on bullying (and not just that), who was certified as a Family Mediator by the Florida Supreme Court and who's own child was bullied (death-threat).
