This page's intention is a wake up-call to the public and hopes to increase public awareness about bullying.

In fall 2007, a 14-year-old Pennsylvania boy thought to have endured taunts from classmates pleaded guilty to concocting a Columbine-like plan to rid the world of bullies.

Hey, parents !

Would you
want your

child to come home like
this ????????

These pictures were taken 15 minutes after the assault on Adrian Ulm (Nov 30, 2007):
(His face was blood covered but an adult near the assault location had already cleaned him up a bit)

Hi, I am Heinz (website), a single parent from Germany living in Colorado, USA who's son Adrian (website), now 14, is bullied in his school over years, the sad peak being severely beaten by a class mate resulting in several head injuries and a broken collar bone. What can be done ?  I want to donate !
Unfortunately our hope that this incident would have brought the bullying to a stop after the approx. 1600 kids knew all about it
(there was an announcement on the school TV system)
and saw Adrian suffering and walking around with his arm in a sling for 8 weeks didn't come through: the bullying continues....

The bullying hasn't stopped, not even after the massiv media coverage, not even after West Middle School
has sent a letter to all parents, not even after the principal had made a long speech on the school TV system in december.

Very recently one asked if Adrians granddad was Hitler himself.

On Feb 15 after a nonintentional collision with another school kid for which Adrian apologized immediately he was told
" If you ever touch me again  I will f...(f-word)  you up 10 times harder than E. did". E. is the boy who assaulted him on Nov 30.

On March 10 a West Middle schooler said to Adrian at lunch: "Shut up, you f....ing nazi" !!!!!
The dean was told, it was considered a "racial harassment" and according to the dean "it was handled with serious
consequences". We do not know what the consequences were.

"Please accept the humble apology of another American, and please let Adrian know that 99.99% of Coloradans and Americans do not agree with or tolerate such behavior. Obviously bullying is universal and while no society is totally free from this type of unfortunate human behavior, when you read stories like Adrian's in today's America, it is especially distressing and disappointing to see.

As the father of a teenage boy, and having been a teenager myself, I understand and can remember similar situations from my youth, I had hoped that as a free society we had moved beyond this type of thing.

Tell Adrian in my family's eye's, he is a true American Hero for what he did. His actions are what make this country great in the face of ignorance and immaturity.  Please let him know that for many of us reading his story he's an American now and has given us all an example of what this nation is about and a lesson on how to act even for adults. I'm sure he realizes that by far and away, bullying is NOT what America is about."
Email from Chris A. , Parker, CO

I am planning  to document the whole story (with pictures), the public's reaction after we went to the media, and tips for others who
are bullied too.

"I'm very disappointed in society by what happened to Adrian last year after reading the article. I presume from watching the TV interview that he's made a full recovery, I do hope he's OK and please pass on my best regards to him.
Adrian is a wonderful young chap with so much to offer, I find it hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't like him and want to be his friend. Keep well and keep safe."
Chaz McGeoch, Dimension Data UK

More than anything else I am calling for kids,
parents and officials to stand up and fight this nasty habits
.

Hawaii: Among the findings by the Safe Schools Community Advisory Committee:

» Nearly 7 percent of middle school and high school students were afraid to go to school at least once a month because they felt unsafe at school or on their way to class.

» Sixteen percent of middle school students and 10 percent of high-schoolers fought at school one or more times a year.

» Thirty-six percent of middle school and 28 percent of high school students reported having their belongings stolen or deliberately damaged at school at least once a year.

Internet bullying came to the attention of many when 13-year-old Megan Meier killed herself after being taunted on a MySpace page linked to a family in her St. Louis-area neighborhood.

This is the very early beginning of the page, so for right now there are this links:

Here are some statements from adults
who were bullied.

"Dear Adrian, our family was horrified to read about the verbal abuse you are experiencing at West Middle School. Both of our children attended West a few years ago, and verbally bullying was a problem at the school back then. I can tell you that as an American: a) these bullies do NOT represent the majority of us...thank good !   b) you and your family are WELCOME here in our country and neighborhood.
As an American family and as a Jewish family, we support you in resisting these cruel and stupid kids, and we wish you and your family health, happiness and prosperity."  Kelly, Mindy, Hannah & Ben Greene

book and musical score.

In 1992 the production ran for 487 performances.

"I just read the article!! My friend Frank Conway was right, we all have to deal with bullies in one way or another, when it happens as brutally as it did to Adrian, he should remember; the ones doing the bullying are almost always failures in life.
Bullies usually"peak" in middle and high school, and end up miserable people. The best revenge is success, and by the sound of it, Adrian is going to be very successful!!

If I can help in any way, please let Adrian Know he will have the ENTIRE Broadway community behind him!!!"

All the best, Christopher Sieber (Sir Galahad in New York Broadway's 'Spamalot')

An article in Reader’s Digest referenced a survey of 15,000 sixth through tenth graders reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2001.  The survey indicated that about 30 percent of students admitted being bullies or victims of bullies.  The same study indicated that about half of the sixth graders reported being bullied, with 13 percent stating that they were picked on at least once at week.

We are overwhelmed by the many warm email responses and blogs full of sympathy from all over the planet as far as New Zealand.

We are also very saddened to have learned a kid in Kansas died recently in a fight under very similar circumstances.

"Thank you for bringing this issue forward. I was bullied in school as a young person myself and lived in fear for years, afraid to tell my parents. Adrian is a very lucky boy to have you there to stand up with him."  Randy Jensen

Adrian is a soft kid who hates aggression, fights and cruelties and he is kind and helpful.

(his friends are Latinos, Canadians, Russians, Afro-Americans, Asians and Europeans. (did I forget one ?)
He performed in a very challenging theater piece for CHAC- Chicano Humanities and Arts Council in 2007,
so stop calling him racist as they did on, Feb 21, in his school !!!)

He cried when I had to setup traps because rats entered our house through a hole in the garage door and when his loved Golden Retriever was driven
over by a car in Germany. When we learned that a young man  in Kansas died in a very similiar situation we both couldn't help it and cried.

I wonder whether any of the bullies ever did such community services Adrian did within months after arriving in US:

He volunteered to clear the Cherry Creek High School grounds of trash on a whole saturday;

he spent hours at "Operation Christmas Child" packaging parcels;

he delivered presents to the kids at Denver Children Hospital who had to stay  there over Christmas.

His participation in plays and musicals does not just mean fun to him; it also brings a lot of joy and entertainment to thousands of visitors/viewers since  he started acting in spring 2007.

Some of his play's roles where very tough to be played by a kid:

In a play in Parker, CO,   "Our Town"  he had to die.

In "Information for Foreigners" in Denver he played several roles:

A judge who refused sentencing a civilian though the secret service of a tyrannic country wanted to force him to;
a child who's father was executed by a death-squadron at home;
a child who's mom was raped and turned mentally sick because of this;
a child who became a street child.

His upcoming musical "Segglin and the Battle of the Mollinduffs" at the Denver Victorian Playhouse (in March) is based around conflict resolution and teaching kids to be themselves. Curriculum based it assists with social studys and health subject matter. All characters are faced with self esteem issues from " the Bully" to the child with "speech problems".

"It's embarrassing that some of our own children don't have a better historical perspective. The Nazis were the evil of their time, but not all Germans were Nazis obviously. The German's have been our allies for years, duh! They make great cars. This kid's dad was not even born until after WWII was over. Maybe Adrian was going to get bullied regardless, and his German heritage was just an easy thing to single out? Whatever the reason, I feel bad for him. What's next, are British kids going to get bullied for setting the White House on fire in 1812?"

As a single-parent I enjoy his support at home; he wraps up the table after dinner, puts the dishes into the dish washer, starts and empties it when finished. He can operate the washer and dryer alone, gets the trash emptied and carries the trash cans out each week. He can cook and knows how to iron !!! He's been a petsitter for our neighbor and was shuffling the snow off the neighbor's sideways without expecting anything. He holds the door open for elderly people.  You moms, can you say this too for your kids ?????????

I am not saying Adrian is a Saint. After having heard months and months of insults and hurt feelings I can imagine he might have mouthed back with something like "Why don't you leave me alone" or "shut up". He is proud of his achievements performing in public theater plays and musicals and he probably
reported and talked about this to friends and class-mates, some of which see it as bragging. Could there be a bit of a jellioussy ???

May I mention that this started 2 years ago when several different kids  stole his pencils, expensive sharpies, and spilled pencil sharpening and powerade over his lunch. In his 7th grade yearbook a child (a friend) wrote an endorsement: "Adi I don't think you're Nazi as everone else does" .
That says a lot, doesn't it ?
In 8th grade it intensified and accumulated finally in this ugly fight. He is being called "nazi" and they made fun of his dad. His love for musical, plays and a broad range of music interests made them call him "gay".

My hope that the bullying would stop or at least reduce after the 1600 kids in his school saw him walking around for 8 weeks with an arm in a sling didn't work out. He is still being bullied by 2 handful of kids. (Feb 28: One of the boys who called him a 'nazi' has written to my son an apology letter which seems to be written on Feb 19, Adrian received it on Feb 28)

"Hi Mr. Ulm, Thank you for sharing your thoughts with the Denver community. Please know that there are thousands of us out here who support you and your son, and would never condone that behavior. It was, as many people here have pointed out, a HATE crime. .... Please let Adrian know that not all Americans/Coloradans support this behavior, and we wish him nothing but the best life has to offer." A parent's blog

Please note how two kids took a stand in  this article.

I could not take and tolerate this any longer, took a lawyer and went public.

We have been in several TV broadcasts now, were interviewed by radio, newspapers and magazines, and guess what:
"Good Morning America" is planning to do something in the near future.

All this will give us the chance to increase public awareness.

Dear Adrian,
I am so glad that you came forth and told the world that you were being bullied.  When I was just your age I was too afraid to tell anyone.  I know that you moved from Germany to the United States and my situation was a lot like yours.  I lived in one house for most of my life until the 7th grade.  We were supposed to move to a new house but it wasn’t ready yet.  So I went to a new school for 7th grade after going to the same school with my friends for those previous 6 years.  Our house took longer than anticipated to finish so I went to that new school for 7th grade and another school for 8th grade where our new home was.  Those kids at the new school for my 8th grade year told me that they hated me because I came from Huntington Beach and they thought I should look like a surfer and be cool.  I wasn’t.  I had glasses and braces and did not like sports.  Most of the kids were OK but there were two jerks who would take me in the bathroom almost every day and beat me up.  I even remember trying to get the nuns who ran the school to take notice but they thought it was just boys “rough-housing.”  That was 35 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday.
My nephews and nieces now go to that same school.  One day when I was visiting them for lunch my nephew was making fun of his cousin and I got so mad at him that my own anger scared me.  I told him that you can do whatever you want at home, but in public family is a safe space and you never make fun of your family in public.

Now I work in New York City for a charity called Broadway Cares.  We raise money in theatre for AIDS and family service organizations across the country.  One of the best things about my job is that I know that I am making a difference in this world.  Another great thing is that I get to meet and become friends with some pretty great people too.                      Frank Conway , New York Broadway

Feb 20, 2008:

Many people have emailed us and reported that their child is or was bullied, many of which got injured or
lived in fear for a long time, or they
(the mailing adults) were bullied themselves.

I have therefor decided to go beyond just protecting my son and move to the next level:

This morning I decided (together with Attorney Gregg McReynolds) to setup a foundation
with my own money to fight bullying.

It will be/is  a 501 C 3 corporation, called "Fightbullying Inc". Funny, Adrian's classmates call it  "f b i"

It is already through the process at the State of Colorado, and we got a TAX-ID (EIN) from the IRS already.

Hey kids, if you were bullied or don't want others to get bullied, ask parents, uncles and aunts, relatives for a contribution !

If our planned programs only saves one kid's life it has paid off already !!!!

What are we planning to do ?

Media work, increasing public awareness, making schools and parents more sensitive

Offering nationwide workshops, seminars and consultation services to improve the education system

Address parents, teachers and school districts for creating a more winning academic environment

We want to talk/present/advice/consult about: Bullying, justice and revenge, acceptance and affiliation, developing self-discipline, gratifications, common discipline practices that don't work -- and why, address particular needs

We know that bullying also exists in the workplace, so we will address that too

We are glad to report that we are working together with a  professional expert on bullying (and not just that), who was certified as a Family Mediator by the Florida Supreme Court  and who's own child was bullied (death-threat).
